About This Event

The Pura Belpré Project/El Proyecto Pura Belpré – Pura Belpré was the first Puerto Rican librarian in NYC and became well-known for instituting bilingual storytelling in the libraries sharing traditional Puerto Rican/Latin American folktales. This re-enactment of her legendary “Bilingual Story Hour,” including famous tales such as Pérez and Martina, Juan Bobo, and The Three Magi, come to life in a creative and interactive experience combining storytelling with puppets!

Pedro Animal Falls in Love/Pedro Animal Se Enamora – This comical folktale from the Dominican Republic tells the story of a simple, fun-loving young man who is crazy in love with a neighborhood girl. This funny, interactive puppet play integrates audiences into the story in order to help Pedro win the hand of his true love.

The Colors of Frida/Los Colores de Frida – Children will learn about the great Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, through storytelling, music, the visual arts, puppets and audience participation!

Juan Bobo’s Tales/Cuentos de Juan Bobo – Based on one of the most famous folktales from Puerto Rico, audiences will learn about Juan Bobo, a charming character who learns to value honesty, hard work and friendship while making the most out of his playful adventures. This interactive unit incorporates SEA’s bilingual children’s book, Juan Bobo’s Tales/Cuentos de Juan Bobo, and a special puppet of Juan Bobo himself to bring about audience participation!
